Are boxes and arrows enough

For Microsoft, BPEL is not an execution language. Each platform will have its own execution engine leveraging the platform strengths. My take: so called 'platform strengths' are sometimes (often?) beyond BPEL expressive power. Try to use business rules in BizTalk and export them as BPEL document, for example... I'm going to provide more detailed examples of business processes (and their states) here as I was asked by Edwin. In this context, this presentation led me to more general question: To what extent we can effectively use 'boxes and arrows' programming style effectively?
