Severe and well acknowledged problems of Workflow Management Systems stem from their rigorous and formal nature. Implementations of workflow tend to be coercive, isolationistic, and inflexible; whereas the natural interaction of people frequently incorporates flexibility, opportunistic behavior, social awareness, and compromise . . . . The application of contemporary workflow management systems is not always able to cope with ill-defined and unstructured environments. In practice, workflow technology often lacks flexibility, because it is trapped in a control flow paradigm.
